Nobody Likes Stale Hamentashen... This Purim, send them something fresh!
Are you board with sending the same old mishloach manot that you do every year? Or are you one of those that try to do a cute theme but that theme has been done and redone so many times that it is not considered cute anymore? Or maybe you are just one of those that enjoy sending lots of people mishloach manot (like I do) but want to keep the expense down? I actually fit all of the above categories. That together with the fact that I am a very busy mother to 7 (who likes being creative) drives myself crazy to come up with a cute original themes (costumes and mishloach manot matching) that are inexpensive. I therefore created this page to help others like me come up with their mishloach manot. True, once I post it here, it will no longer be original but in truth one only need to be original in their own community. So as long as two people from the same community don't take the same idea we will all still be original!
- Theme #1: A Color theme : Choose any color and buy products that are cheap of that color. Put them in a container of the same color and dress up as crayola crayons of that same color. Easy, Cute & Inexpensive.
- Theme #2: Pesach theme : Each member of the family dresses up as a different character in the Pesach story. When my family did it I dressed my kids up as Batya, Moshe and Pharaoh. For Batya, I purchased an Egyptian dress and stuffed a long white glove which I attached to the sleeve of the dress. For Pharaoh, I purchased an Egyptian head dress and let my son wear that with his pajamas - voila Pharaoh in Pajamas! For the Mis loach Minot I purchased paper Seder plates and put each item of the Seder plate on it in a candy version. For example - the ground mirror was shredded coconut and the egg was a candy egg purchased in the local candy store, the shank bone was a candy bone, the charoset was applesauce and the celery was a thick green sour stick.
- Theme #3: Chanukah theme : Each member of the family dresses up as characters from the Chanukah story - Greeks and Maccabees. The Mishloach Manot consists of Doughnuts and Chocolate coins or another idea would be Greek Salad and Greek yogurt.
- Theme #4: Israel Theme: Here there are many options for costumes - settlers, sabras, IDF uniforms, Israeli Police Officer. The mishloach manot consists of Israeli salad, chumos and pitas (falafel balls can be added for those that want to go all out).
- Theme #5: Chassidic Theme: Boys can dress in long chassidic coats, while girls dress in a house coat with a pair of tights on their head (I am not joking once the end of the tights get tucked under - it really looks like the chassidic hair covering) - a cellphone tucked under the head covering - finishes off the look. The mishloach manot that goes with this package can consist of Yerushalmi Kugel and pickles.
- Theme #6: Clown Theme: I found the cutest clown costumes online and gave out clown related food. I put the whole mishloach manot in a smiley face cup and added smiley face cookies, clown gum, clown chocolates and more. Even though this theme is not so original it is so cute that everyone loved it!
